Your IEMs Start With the Right Impression
The performance of a custom in-ear monitor starts before the monitor is ever built.
It starts with the impression.
A precise ear impression gives your IEM manufacturer the information needed to create a monitor that fits your ear properly. An inaccurate impression can mean fit problems, poor isolation, discomfort, or having to start the process over.
That’s why these appointments are handled by Dr. Ryan Hill at our Montgomery location.
Ryan regularly works with professional and recreational musicians and is experienced in taking impressions according to the specifications required by custom IEM manufacturers.
We are manufacturer agnostic. Whether you’ve already selected a manufacturer or are still exploring your options, our role is to provide the accurate impression your manufacturer needs.
Simple Process. Specialized Expertise.
If you already know which IEMs you want, getting your impressions shouldn’t be complicated.
Most custom IEM impression appointments take approximately 15 minutes.
During your appointment, Dr. Hill will examine your ears and take the impressions needed for your custom monitors according to your manufacturer’s specifications.
You’ll then take the impressions with you for the next step in your order process.
If this is your first set of custom in-ear monitors, that’s completely fine. Ryan can also explain the process and help you understand what to expect.
Better Monitoring Without Simply Making Everything Louder
One of the biggest advantages of custom IEMs is control.
On a loud stage, musicians can find themselves competing with amplifiers, drums, monitors, crowd noise, and the rest of the band just to hear what they need.
A custom IEM allows your monitor mix to be delivered directly to your ears. Depending on your role, that may include your own voice or instrument, other musicians, backing tracks, cues, or a click track.
The custom fit also provides physical isolation from surrounding stage noise.
That combination can make it easier to hear the details you need without continually fighting the room.
But Custom IEMs Aren’t Automatically Hearing Protection
This is where seeing an audiologist matters.
A custom fit can reduce outside sound, but the level coming through the monitor still matters.
If you turn your IEMs up excessively, you can still expose your ears to potentially damaging sound levels.
Ryan sees this frequently in musicians. Some performers are extremely careful about their monitoring levels. Others gradually increase the volume until the sound inside their monitors is every bit as intense as the stage environment they were trying to escape.
The goal isn’t simply to put more sound directly into your ears. It’s to create a better listening environment so you can hear what you need at a responsible level.

Most musicians spend years thinking about their instruments, microphones, amps, pedals, monitors, mixes, and technique. Their hearing often gets less attention. But hearing is part of the entire system.
