What to Expect at Your First Hearing Aid Fitting - The Hill Hear Better Clinic

Luckily, with a little advance research, you can learn what to expect at your first hearing aid fitting and help alleviate any concerns. We have a few tips below to ease you through that appointment.

Length of Visit
This first fitting may take up to 1 hour, which is good to know if you?re expecting to breeze in and out in 15 minutes! Allowing for this time gives you and your hearing care professional time to go over any questions, review the use and care of your device(s), and most importantly, time to fine tune the hearing aids using Real Ear Measures to give you the best fit and experience possible. You also should plan to have several follow-up appointments to make any necessary adjustments after the first fitting appointment.
Device Fitting
Fitting a hearing aid includes more than just ensuring a comfortable fit of the physical device. Your audiologist ?will be using Real Ear Measures to fit and fine tune your hearing aids (at least at THHBC) for maximum performance in all situations. This requires measurements of the hearing aids in your ears with a very specific computer and microphone set up. Your hearing care professional may also be programming your hearing aids for specific listening situations if you have mentioned certain difficulties in different environments, like being in a noisy restaurant. During this time, which covers the bulk of your visit, you should get instructions about cleaning your hearing aids, how to adjust the volume, battery care, and any other device-specific information you will need.
Future Commitment
It?s important to remember that adjusting to new hearing aids takes some time while your brain learns again how to process sounds it hasn?t heard for a while. Be sure to discuss your expectations with your hearing care professional so false expectations do not derail your hearing aid experience, and always attend follow-up appointments. Minor adjustments after the initial fitting appointment could make a big difference in how you perceive your performance with your device.
