Tips for Learning to Love Your Hearing Aids
By Ryan Hill, Au.D
Have you been recently fit for hearing aids? If so, we understand that it may take some time to get used to wearing them.? Some of our patients only take a few days to get used to them while others take longer?weeks or even months?to fully adjust. And while that is perfectly natural, we also don?t want you to get discouraged during the adjustment period and give up on them.
So, in order to help you learn to love your hearing aids and enjoy the benefits of hearing better, following are some things to keep in mind:
- Give it time. Typically, hearing loss develops over many years and treatment takes time as well. Once you are fit, you will likely discover sounds you haven?t heard, or heard clearly, in a while. Your brain needs time to process these sounds, just as your body needs time to get used to wearing them. And you are always welcome to come in for further adjustment anytime- we are here to help.
- Keep them in. Wearing your hearing aids as much as possible will help you get used to feeling them and will also provide us with the information needed to adjust your instruments as needed. Like eyeglasses, the more you wear them, the more you start to forget they are there.
- Write it down. Keep track of situations/environments that you feel you may not be hearing your best while wearing your hearing aids. That way, we can re-program your devices so they work optimally in all situations.
Your hearing matters. We understand the importance of hearing well for your overall health and happiness so please let us know how we can help you achieve better hearing.
